This third collaboration of classical violinist Elmira Darvarova and the sons of great sarodist Amjad Ali Khan [Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali Bangash] and the second with the addition of father Amjad Ali is another group of light folk improvisations based on classical modes: Raga Marwa; Raga Tilak Kamod; Raga Bhairavi; Raga Durga; Raga Maan; and Raga Bhatiali. Again. The pieces are mainly duets. Darvarova includes a solo taken from a Bulgarian folk song, here Grozdanka. Ever since violinist Yehudi Menuhin introduced Ravi Shankar to American audiences and recorded with him, East-West jams have explored each other's techniques and styles. Darvarova does not imitate the Hindustani approach to violin but keeps to her own classical form, adding, however, some of the grit and crispness of the sarod.
Tablist Anubrata Chatterjee, son of Anindo Chatterjee, marks out the tals, meter, beginning with teental, 16-beats, of the introductory track, Gentle Sunset [with Amjad], whose fast close is far from mild. Ayaan first picks his strings in Midnight Tenderness, as a harp, before commencing a brief meterless alap, bending the strings, blues-like, for microtones. The two instruments take turns jugulbandi style at first, echoing and commenting on the other, but then play together the same thematic notes. Amjad is next with his Peaceful Morning in 6-beat dadra-tal. The ever popular, sweet Bhairavi truly welcomes the day with clarity and tranquility, the violin and sarod complementing each other with smiling lyricism. Amaan offers The Brightest of Stars in teental, shifting at the end to 7-beat rupak-tal. This longest (and best) track of the album (17 minutes) gives opportunity for greater development, especially the passionate and tender alap with the violin singing a lullaby followed by the sarod's slow then tremolo repetition of one note (again blues-like). Ayaan next plays the brief Romantic Ecstasy, taken from a Rajasthani folk melody and structured in 14-beat deepchandi-tal; the sarod elegantly floating above the dense rhythms of the drums. After the virtuosic cadenza-like Bulgarian folk interlude, My Burning Tears, Amaan alone closes the album with Enchanted River, a boat song in dadra-tal that moves swiftly as a Bengali dance. The 73 minutes showcases superb artistry and various moods of North Indian music that shine with dignity and serenity.
