It's hard to go wrong with this set, which spans jazz sub genres and drifts into what can be considered pop. If you are a hard core jazz aficionado you may take issue with some of the selections. On the other hand, if you relax a bit and just enjoy the music this six disc set is both a bargain and a pleasure.
Normally I am one of those pedantic jazz fans who insists on certain sub genres and eschews anything that my narrow mind cannot handle. I found myself liking just about every track in this collection in spite of myself. Heck, I even enjoyed Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy (something that I would normally bristle at anyone suggesting that song.)
For me, the two discs that stood out (and were worth the price of the entire collection to me) were Disc 1 (mostly female vocalists and not always strictly jazz) and Disc 5 (Miles, Clifford Brown and other personal favorites.)
While I listen to Discs 1 and 5 the most, when I am in the mood for, say, swing, Disc 2 (and parts of 3) are perfect, as are Disc 4 when I want something more pop-oriented or Disc 6 for a good mix of older, almost traditional jazz, mixed with bebop and early 50s stuff.
If you want a good introduction to jazz and jazzy pop, this is a nice collection. Some of the selections are relaxing, and some are hard swinging and jumping, but all - in my opinion - are enjoyable.
