Wañukta in Ecuador’s native Kichwa language means: a hard blow that sends you to “the other side”. The Tonic is what softens things a bit, so it doesn’t hurt that much. The use of a Kichwa word reflects a deep pride, love and respect for the Native roots in Ecuador’s music. This project is framed in the current movement of reafirming local culture to defend its place in the world.
Through original compositions and new versions of emblematic Ecuadorean songs, Wañukta Tonic offers flashes of Ecuadorean idiosyncrasy. For Alex Alvear, to create new versions is simply to play traditional melodies, rhythms and harmonies within other musical contexts in order to take them into a new dimension. Beautiful melodies and harmonies that can comfortably exist within a non-traditional context; this is what makes this project unique. He belives its important to utilize the available universal musical resources to ensure an unmistakeable local sound.
Ecuador’s diversity manifiests itself in each of its cultural expressions, starting from its food. Here we eat something different every day because every people has its own flavor and every individual his/her own seasoning.
