The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's label has set incredibly high standards for both performances and sound recording. This set of highlights from Handel's FLORIDANTE is brilliantly sung by an all Canadian cast. Catherine Robbin sings beautifully in the title role, as do Linda Maguire, Nancy Argenta, Ingrid Attrot and Mel Braun. Alan Curtis (the only American involved in the production) leads Toronto's wonderful Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in perfectly paced performances of each of the excerpts.
It has always been mystifying when a recording company assembles a full cast for an opera and then only records excerpts. This performance is so good that it is a real pity that it is not complete.
