My name is Bjarni and I'm an Icelandic composer based in London, UK.
I initially trained as a pianist, but soon turned to composition after discovering the freedom of improvisation and the endless creative potential of modern recording technology. As a child, I would sit in concert halls or in front of hi-fi's listening and laboriously studying the sounds produced. I would spend my time in front of a piano or a computer, creating rhythms and melodies, attempting to recreate these sounds either by constructing my own musical ideas or playing works on the piano by classical or contemporary composers. The inexhaustible need to develop and understand all aspects of musical creation pushed me to explore different facets of the field as well as its function within society.
I spent a number of years playing keyboard and piano in various ensembles and bands across South Africa, the UK and the Nordics, before releasing a critically-acclaimed studio album with my band, Shadow Parade in Iceland.
Soon after the album release I felt the need to return to my classical roots. I studied a BA in Music Composition at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, and immediately after completed an MA in Composition at the University of Bristol. During my studies I explored my interest in film and began focusing on music for the screen and other media.
Since graduation, I have composed for feature films, documentaries, animations and shorts, as well as advertisements. I have written production albums for EMI, and my own company, Maven Sound, and I am currently writing and producing for some upcoming UK based artists. Projects include The Karman Line, a BAFTA nominated short starring Olivia Colman and Having you, starring Anna Friel and Andrew Buchan. (IMDB)
