Day 1

“In a beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.
And the Earth was Tohu-Bohu.
And divine spirits flew over the waters. [...]
And there was evening and morning.”

Consternation, desolation, chaos, confusion, fusion, abyss.
Obscurity and gaping hole.
Cosmic dust and stellar conflagrations.

7-11 Partia II in B Minor
for Two Scordatura Violins & Basso Continuo

Praeludium 02:14 - Allemande & Variatio 03:18
Balletto 00:51 - Aria 00:48 - Gigue 01:26

Day 2

“Let the waters be crossed by the firmament.
Let there be waters and waters. [...]
He set apart the waters that were under the firmament from the waters above it.
God named the firmament the heavens. There was evening and morning.”

May the movement of the waters cease in their center;
may there be firmness and immobility.
The primordial waters standing transfixed before the Creator.
The waters bore forth the heavens.

12-17 Partia III in A Major
for Two Scordatura Violins & Basso Continuo

Praeludium 01:27 - Allemande 01:55 - Amener 01:14
Balletto 00:55 - Gigue 00:33 - Ciacona 02:58

Day 3

“Let the waters under the heavens gather
in a same place and let dry land stand.
God called it the ground and called the body of waters the seas.
Let the Earth be green;
let each sprout produce its seed, each fruit tree
the fruit of its kind with seed [to plant] in the ground.
There was evening and morning.”

World's first spring, pull all vegetation from the ground,
roots, foliage, with thy titanic strength!
First deluge, endless ocean, make room for the matrix of all things!
May each fruit bear in itself the quintessence
of all future generations in a never-ending cycle!

18-24 Partia IV in E-Flat Major
for Two Scordatura Violins & Basso Continuo

Sonata 02:19 - Allemande 01:31 - Trezza 00:57
Aria 00:44 - Canario 00:36 - Gigue 01:19 - Pollicinello 00:18

Day 4

“May there be luminous points in the firmament of the heavens
to distinguish day from night and may they serve
to herald passing seasons, days, and years. [...]
There was evening and morning.”

Let Time begin; and you, oh stars,
be the shining signals of the Great Clock, day and night.

25-29 Partia V In G Minor
for Two Scordatura Violins & Basso Continuo

Intrada 01:19 - Aria 01:18 - Balletto 00:40
Gigue 01:03 - Passacaglia 05:38

Day 5

“May the waters teem with life,
birds flying in the firmament of the sky. [...]
There was evening and morning.”

The great march of the living crowd grows in the luxuriant desert!

30-32 Partia VI in D Major
for Two Violins & Basso Continuo

Praeludium 02:30 - Aria with Variatio I–XIII 12:54 - Finale 01:06

Day 6

“Let us create the human modeled after ourselves and our image;
may they rule over the fish in the sea, the foul in the airs,
all the animals on dry land, and all creeping animals. [...]
There was evening and morning.”

Divine human, human too divine,
your intelligence commands you to serve an entirely different reign,
your reason demands harmony with Nature.

33-39 Partia VII in C Minor
for 2 Violas d'amore and Continuo

Praeludium 03:11 - Allemande 01:56 - Sarabande 01:34
Gigue 02:12 - Aria 01:41 - Trezza 00:51 - Arietta variata 06:57

Day 7

“The heavens, the Earth and all their legion were completed.
On the seventh day, God finished his accomplishment.
He rested from his handiwork.
God blessed the seventh day and made it holy for he rested for his work;
the Creation that God had put into place [...]”

Bliss of the work of His hands, calm, silence,
and rest after the earthquake gives birth to the world;
death from laborious frenzy Salutary abyss,
vital resource, rebirth, resurrection.
Love and Sympathy.

In the seventeenth century, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber composed a masterpiece dedicated to the violin (Rosary Sonatas, Harmonia Artificioso-Ariosa, Recueil de 8 sonates pour le violon, Sonata Representativa, etc.) inventing a new virtuosity, free, and "fantastic", which inspired many composers and many violinists, allowing Bohemia to be a region where the violin is king. Until today, the great virtuoso gypsy violinists, performing also as improvised music, as music written after the classical repertoire, perpetuate the tradition of the hungarian "fantastic" gypsy violin. Patrick Bismuth, baroque violin virtuoso, practiced itself for years these seductive traditions. What more natural than wanting to be closer to these sources during the interpretation of the mysterious cycle Harmonia Artificioso-Ariosa.

Reinventing the virtuosity of the violin with extravagance and audacity, the collection of sonatas Harmonia Artificioso-Ariosa, published in the late 17th century, is one of the finest examples of the genius of Heinrich Biber. Patrick Bismuth continues with this double album his exploration of this fascinating book, served by the rich sound palette deployed by his ensemble La Tempesta.
